Background
Jelmer graduated cum laude with a Master's degree in Civil Law at Radboud University Nijmegen, specialising in Intellectual Property, Privacy and Data Protection. His master's thesis examined the copyright framework for training large language models through the text and data mining exception under the DSM Directive and its interaction with the AI Act.
During his legal studies, Jelmer gained experience at leading Dutch law firms, working on matters relating to technology, media, intellectual property and privacy law. Before joining The Data Lawyers, he worked as a judicial law clerk within the Dutch judiciary, where he drafted judgments in commercial and civil law disputes. This experience further strengthened his analytical approach, legal reasoning and ability to translate complex legal issues into clear and practical advice.
